Our Story:
From Research to Practice

Sierra Health Economics grew naturally from years of academic collaboration. Our team —working through various universities and research projects—studied what people in rural and under-served areas of California want from their healthcare system and the challenges they face in obtaining the services that they need. We also examined the role of public health agencies in helping them get the services they need and how health economics can help promote better decision making and engender trust. Using this knowledge, we developed training programs, conducted economic evaluations, and tested methods for integrating health economics and behavioral economics into everyday public health practice.

The more we worked with these agencies, the clearer it became that they needed ongoing support beyond one-time research projects or academic papers. They needed accessible tools they could use independently, training tailored to their specific challenges, and consulting services scaled to their budgets.

Sierra Health Economics formalized what we were already doing: making health economics practical, accessible, and relevant for California's public health community. By establishing a dedicated consulting practice, we can provide continuity, build long-term partnerships, and ensure our tools and methods evolve with the changing needs of the agencies we serve.
